Area of focus: third-world development and economics; land rights and poverty
“Radical and compelling” was one reaction to Hernando de Soto’s “Truly Big Idea”, which centres around his theory that the poor cannot create productive capital until the legal system includes them in property rights. Former US President Bill Clinton referred to the theory as “the most promising anti-poverty initiative in the world”. The economist states that the legalisation of property rights in burgeoning townships will help break the cycle of poverty in developing countries, as valid property title deeds can serve as collateral for loans for those below the breadline.
His books, The Mystery of Capital and The Other Path, have been translated into 20 languages, and he heads up the Institute for Liberty and Democracy in his native Peru, as well as consulting almost 20 heads of state.
